![]() ![]() They could throw in tons of other ridiculous references that aren't just Bootleg DVD movies too. That's totally got to be a reference to The Snow Queen, that Dollar Store knock off of Frozen. Oh look, here's an Elsa boss with a little white ferret that chases after the characters. Oh look, here's a Panda wearing purple arm, leg and wristbands doing karate moves - that's so totally a reference to The Little Panda Fighter bootleg of Kung-fu Panda. Oh look, here's a blond mermaid with a dolphin pet that shoots sonar sound waves, that's clearly a reference to that bootleg Little Mermaid DVD I saw at the Dollar Store. Make that the gimmick / charm of the game and turn it into an Easter egg hunt. ![]() Throw in a ton of visual references to bargain bin cartoon knock offs. Like Kung-fu Panda > The Little Panda Fighter" - well maybe the game makers should totally roll with that kind of criticism? I've seen comments on Twitter saying "This is like one of those DVDs you get at the Dollar Store that tricks your grandma into thinking it's a popular cartoon. Of course people are going to screech that it's a rip off, copy-cat, clone - whatever. ![]() but so many other genres to choose from and they choose the same gameplay style as Cuphead. The artist is talented, they definitely aren't "lazy" - hand drawn animation is a bitch to do seeing as it's all frame-by-frame. Imagine if they would have taken a game like Secret of Mana and done a hand drawn send-up of it, while making references to other games and having self aware humor. I absolutely love the hand drawn art style, but I really wish they would have applied it to another genre of game besides the typical Contra style run n' gun. The more I think about it, the more I want to just play Cuphead instead, and weirdly enough, its made me more excited for the Delicious Last Course instead, but that’s just me. It’s not a bad looking game, but when you make something that goes beyond ‘inspired by _’ and into ‘reskinned’ territory, you’re going to be judged by the standards set by the game you’re basically copying, and Enchanted Portals has nothing that interests me. ![]() They can make their not-Cuphead Cuphead game, and more power to them. And I doubt the music is going to match up to Cupheads, either. The art, though? They tried, but that’s where they really can’t match up to Cuphead at all. The similarities are entirely in how blatant the mechanics and player animations are, and in the bosses themselves that seem to mimic some of the Cuphead bosses, but reskinned. This definitely isn’t inspired by 1930s animated cartoons. There are similarities in the art to the untrained eye, yes, but for someone who has played Cuphead a lot, I don’t think it looks similar to Cuphead at all. There is some effort there (not creatively, but you know), but it’s nowhere near Cupheads art.Ĭuphead has beautiful hand drawn environments and characters, as well as animation. To be honest, the main thing that puts me off is not the copied mechanics and gameplay, but the art and animation. If I didn’t have Cuphead on Switch and this was released last year, I’d probably settle for it, but I’ve no interest in this game. I’m pretty sure the DLC is going to be out well before this game.Īs for what I think of it, it’s whatever. This doesn’t even have its own kickstarter page set up, and you’re talking like it’s going to be out before Cupheads DLC. ‘I personally think that while we're waiting for the DLC which isn't exactly coming soon, I think some bonus Cuphead would be quite fine by me.’ ![]()
